Whether you want to share the ownership of a horse with a friend (also known as fractional ownership), or you want to share your horse with someone else without sacrificing your ownership of the horse, Share-Your-Horse.com can provide a contract that is easy to understand and suits your needs. We also provide detailed drafting and guidance notes so it’s even easier to fill out the agreement and start sharing your horse! On the website you can find loads of free advice and help too.

Our Contracts
We provide two specialist contracts designed for using in horse loan arrangements, and more information about them can be found below. They are drafted carefully to take into account the issues that are most important when sharing a horse, such as who will carry out the daily tasks, how payments will be divided and when each sharer can exercise the horse. The agreements have been reviewed thoroughly by a solicitor experienced in contract law. Each agreement comes with detailed drafting and guidance notes explaining the operation of the contract, the reasoning for its contents and the help you need to complete the contract to suit the needs of your individual sharing situation. These notes also include examples of additional clauses and schedules that are available to customise your agreement, and provide guidance on drafting your own clauses if necessary.

Why Horse Share?
Different people are interested in sharing a horse for different reasons. The top three are as follows:

  • Financial - Owning or keeping a horse is expensive when you add up the costs of tack, rugs, stabling, bedding, feed, farriery, clipping, worming, insurance, vaccinations and other veterinary treatments... so it really helps if you can find someone else to split the costs with.
  • Companionship and advice – Horse Share with others is a good way of ensuring that there is always someone else around who has a vested interest in the horse and can help with any problems that may arise. The sharers are likely to discuss issues together, and this can make it a more sociable activity than owning a horse on your own.
  • Time – The time commitment in keeping a horse or pony will vary greatly depending on the stabling arrangements that you have arranged (full livery, DIY livery or on your own yard). However, whichever option you choose, a horse still requires regular contact and riding and will take a lot of time from a single owner. Sharing a horse with others divides this time requirement between the sharers and is therefore less of a burden on one person. Providing it was organised sufficiently in advance, if one of the sharers goes on holiday then the other sharer(s) can care for the horse. In this respect it makes it far more convenient than owning a horse on your own.

These factors are often related to each other. For example, it will take less time for the sharers to look after a horse that is kept in full livery at a livery yard, but it will cost them much more money. The sharers will need to discuss their priorities together, and how much free time each has available, as well as their budget. If one of the sharers has more free time than the others then it might be agreed that that person will do more of the work, but in return they will pay less in contribution to the costs of keeping the horse. But, if all of the sharers work full time then it may be that they would prefer to pay a livery yard to do more of the mundane day to day work involved. The sharing arrangement can be flexible to accommodate these different approaches to sharing a horse.
